OVERVIEW
Pigeons are the most common pest bird in urban environments. For the most part, pigeons are characterized by their short necks and proportionately small heads. They are usually gray or blue in color with various color markings. They are likely most known for their feasting habits—pigeons will happily eat just about anything they can find, from seeds and grains to garbage. In addition to being a nuisance, pigeon droppings can transmit a number of diseases, and pigeons themselves can carry parasites, fleas, ticks, and more.
Pigeon Habitats
Pigeons are often found in cities because they are drawn to the availability of food provided by people and garbage alike. Although they prefer to nest away from people, they will inhabit roofs, attics, ledges, drain spouts, and more. They are also often found nesting, roosting, and feeding in parks, where they are often fed by people. When nesting, pigeons use sticks, leaves, and even garbage to build their nests.
The Dangers of Pigeons
In addition to being simply annoying, pigeons can be dangerous for a number of reasons. Their nests and droppings can be destructive and unsightly. They’re perhaps most infamous for being filthy creatures that are capable of spreading diseases. Some of the threats of their droppings include:
- Asthma
- Salmonella
- Listeriosis, histoplasmosis, and cryptococcosis
- Diseases from parasites, ticks, and fleas
